As the year ends , our last blog is focused on being grateful towards this role as a psychologist and the clients you fill up the bittersweet phase of being a mental health professional. The year marks a personal new haul and the experience in sessions redefined the outlook towards self and this privilege of being a psychologist.
Irvin David Yalom is an American existential psychiatrist who is an emeritus professor of psychiatry at Stanford University, and with whom our founder Aarti Ahuja , shares a birthday ( 13th June ) . Born 60 years apart yet holding space in the profession in different contexts made Aarti turn to his teachings through books and research work available in formulating her own ever evolving understanding of being a psychologist/ therapist.
A quote from him that influenced settling the role of being a psychologist this decade for Ms Ahuja
“To be a therapist is to walk alongside others in the labyrinth of their deepest fears, joys, and struggles. It’s a privilege to witness their transformation, to hold the space for their healing, and to learn from their resilience. As Yalom reminds us, the relationship between therapist and client is a unique and sacred one, a dynamic that, in its most profound moments, can heal both. Being a therapist is not just a profession—it’s an opportunity to grow alongside those we help, to continuously be humbled by the human capacity for change, and to experience a deep, reciprocal gratitude for the trust and vulnerability shared.”
This quote reflects the ethos of Yalom’s approach—highlighting the profound, mutual learning that can occur between therapist and client, emphasizing both the gratitude and the transformative nature of the therapeutic journey.
Being a psychologist in India can be incredibly fulfilling, as it allows for both personal and professional growth, while also making a positive impact on society. The journey is not easy nor rosy. The challenges of societal stigmas , emphasis of personal growth and witnessing the personal shadows again and again makes the psychologist in the human being respect solitude and focused way of attempting balanced living.
Without making solitude a friend and maintaining good harmonious social relations no psychologist can grow as a professional , such scenarios are primarily reflective after sessions as the pause , makes one see
That there was an opportunity to make a difference , influencing the mental health and well-being of the other individual who has chosen to unburden their life in the most confidential setting and upholding that client- psychologist trust to the fullest.
As in a certain socio-economic segment the shift of how mental health is being perceived offers a sense of purpose, knowing that one is part of a larger movement toward mental health awareness.
As it is needed everywhere the role of a psychologist with different specialisation is important but a general and applied psychologist still have a huge scope within this diversity to deepen their expertise and understanding of different psychological needs of others along with themselves.
There is thankfulness to be in the profession at that pivotal changing landscape that shifts toward better acceptance and demand for therapy, which leads to more opportunities to serve clients and influence society positively.
Personal satisfaction received is a slow process but the client feedback , colleagues and mentors acknowledging efforts all goes in filling up our professional fulfillment cup which drives the personal validation of being a part of change , growth and improvement of others.
The various areas available to diversify in and grow as therapist / psychologist gives a lot of job flexibility especially to the new generation of psychologists . They can create a dynamic career while increasing mental health awareness and have the opportunity to advocate for better mental health policies, workplace wellness programs, and educational initiatives, contributing to a larger societal shift in how mental health is approached.
The golden gratitude point of being a therapist / psychologist is the lifelong chance of self reflection , emotional intelligence and personal evolution that gives a front row seat to understanding human behavior, empathy, and the challenges others face enriches one’s own life perspective.
In essence, being a psychologist in India, in 2024 and taking it forward many years for the team behind Tatava Studio Simplyfying Wellness is a thankfulness and daily gratitude.
For Ms Aarti Ahuja everything she does is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the mental health landscape, help individuals live better lives, and be part of a growing field with immense societal potential.
